In December 2021 I hosted the inaugural meeting of the Designated Safeguarding Leads Group of the International Schools Association of Thailand (ISAT). Great to see everyone happy to give their time in order to share safeguarding knowledge and understanding to all 180 ISAT schools, and beyond. It will provide a valuable channel for schools to obtain support in dealing with issues that arise in schools and provide child safeguarding training for all teachers.
It was an honour this week to be invited to deliver sexual violence awareness training to 2 classes of year 12 & 13 students at HeadStart International School Phuket www.headstartphuket.com as part of their PSHE program. Raising awareness of sexual violence is an important aspect of a student’s education before they head off to universities around the world.
Research in the UK estimates that 8% of female students will suffer rape during their time at university. This compares to 4% of women who will become victims of rape from the age of 16. Higher rates are reported in the US, whilst in other countries, such as Thailand, it is difficult to estimate the true extent of the prevalence of rape and sexual assault. Typically, under-reporting in Asian countries is estimated at 95%.
